在護國公克倫威爾死後，其子無力維持英格蘭共和國政權的穩定。保皇黨因此趁機擁立英皇查爾斯二世復辟，並要求其接受君主立憲制的約束。

After the death of Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell, his son (Richard Cromwell) was unable to maintain the stability of the Commonwealth of England. Royalists therefore enthroned the restoration of Charles II, while requiring him to be accept restrictions of constitutional monarchy.
